In order to commemorate the event and to define the place of this "forgotten pope" in twentieth-century history, on November 3-5, 2016, the Fondazione per le Scienze Religiose Giovanni XXIII (Fscire) hosted an international conference, entitled "Benedict XV in the world of the useless slaughter", in which more than a hundred historians from all over the world participated. The aim of the initiative, supported by the Historical and Scientific Committee for Italy?s National Anniversaries, is to shed light on the key issues of this pontificate, from Giacomo Della Chiesa?s education in the theological seminary in Genua to his heritage and memory all along the twentieth century. Les articles réunis ici se penchent sur la notion de «monumentum», et cherchent à montrer comment le fait d?«être monument» n?est pas une caractéristique exclusive de certaines constructions ? par exemple, les structures verticales, avec lesquelles on essaie, de façon tout à fait explicite, d?établir un contact avec l?altérité d?en Haut, avec la «voûte céleste», pour reprendre encore Eliade: l?échelle, la stèle, la tour, le temple ? mais la caractéristique fondamentale de toute construction proprement humaine précisément. Cette «habitation» humaine (et non simple «construction», car cette activité appartient aussi aux animaux) a toujours le caractère de la «monumentalité»: un renvoi, qu?on ne peut pas supprimer, à autrui, une ouverture irréductible vers le haut, vers l?altérité d?un «là», qui habite au fond même de l?«ici-bas» dans lequel se trouve tout sujet humain individuel.
